Syrian journalist Vesim el Adil, who had made several contributions to Anadolu Agency, was killed Friday in  Russian airstrikes in Syria's northwestern province of Idlib, local sources said.

According to local sources, 28-year-old Adil was struck by pieces of shrapnel during a Russian airstrike in Idlib's town of Binin.

Adil was reportedly trying to go to the scene to record the Russian bombardment when he was killed.

He was buried in his hometown, in Idlib's Maarat al-Numan district.

A freelancer, Adil used to cover developments in southeastern Idlib and contributed to Anadolu Agency and to other media outlets.

Russia began carrying out airstrikes in Syria in late September while Iran has provided ground troops to back Assad’s regime.

At least 250,000 people have been killed since the conflict began in 2011, with 7.6 million internally displaced and more than four million having fled abroad.
