Syrian Turkmen weigh up Geneva talks invite

ANKARA

The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, has invited the Syrian Turkmen Assembly to talks in Geneva.

The assembly said on Friday it would consider the invitation, according to a statement.

If Syrian Turkmen decide to attend, their main priority will be to "carry their struggle for dignity and freedom to international arena".

The Syria talks in Geneva that started last week come ahead of the June three-year anniversary of the Geneva Communique which laid out a six-point plan to stop the violence and move the two sides in Syria towards a political settlement.

More than 40 Syrian groups, including opposition armed organizations, have been invited to attend the talks.

The Syrian government, neighboring countries and members of the UN Security Council have all been invited for the low-key, separate discussions on the current crisis.

The Geneva consultations on Syria started on Tuesday, May 5 and are expected to last up to six weeks, although there is no cut-off date.

Syria's civil war, now in its fifth year, has led to the deaths of more than 220,000 people and forced almost four million to flee the country.
