NEW YORK (AA) - Americans marked Wednesday the 12th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people on September 11, 2001.
During the commemoration ceremony at the National September 11 Memorial plaza, names of people who died in the attacks were recited, including a 26-year old Turkish citizen Zuhtu Ibis, who was living in New Jersey then.
U.S. President Barack Obama did not attend the ceremony while Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo, Mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg, former mayor Rudolph Giuliani, and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn were present.
During the commemoration ceremony, Americans participated in a moment of silence six times marking the hijacked jets' crashing into the World Trade Center, as well as the Pentagon and near Shanksville.
The event at the plaza began at 8:46 a.m. with a moment of silence in recognition of the moment when the first air plane struck the North Tower.
Families also visited Ground Zero, a special section offering information for the loved ones of those killed in the attack.
